The Most Common Mini Golf Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Mini golf might look simple, but once you’re faced with tricky slopes, obstacles and challenging holes, it can be surprisingly easy to make a few mistakes!

Whether you’re a regular player or trying mini golf for the first time, a little strategy can make all the difference. Here are some of the most common mini golf mistakes and how to avoid them.

Hitting the Ball Too Hard

One of the biggest mistakes in mini golf is putting too much power behind your shot. It can be tempting to give the ball a big hit, especially when you’re trying to get it past an obstacle, but too much power can quickly send your ball off course.

Our tip: Start with a controlled shot and focus on accuracy rather than power. You can always adjust your next shot based on where the ball finishes.

Not Looking at the Whole Course

It’s easy to focus on where the ball is and immediately take your shot, but have you actually looked at the whole course?

Before you putt, take a moment to look at the slopes, obstacles, corners and the position of the hole. Thinking about your route before you hit the ball can help you avoid unnecessary shots.

Ignoring Slopes and Angle

Mini golf courses are designed to make you think. Slopes and angled surfaces can completely change the direction of your ball, so don’t assume it will travel in a straight line.

Our tip: Consider how the ball will react when it hits a slope or barrier and adjust your aim accordingly.

Going Straight for the Hole

Sometimes the obvious route isn’t the best one. Obstacles may mean you need to bounce the ball off a wall, take a wider angle or use the layout of the hole to your advantage.

Look beyond the hole itself and think about the easiest route to get there.

Rushing Your Shot

When you’re playing with friends or family, it can be tempting to rush, especially when everyone is waiting for their turn. But taking a few extra seconds to line up your shot can make a big difference.

Take a breath, check your position and focus on where you want the ball to go.

Forgetting to Have Fun!

Of course, mini golf isn’t just about getting the lowest score. Whether you’re playing adventure golf in Bristol with the family, challenging your friends or enjoying a date night, the most important thing is to enjoy the experience.

A few missed shots, unexpected bounces and ridiculous attempts are all part of the fun!
